How I Feel About; Outside vs. Inside Cats

If you’ve read some of my older posts, you’ll probably know my opinion on this topic already, but I figured I’d still do a post about this explaining my reasons for being against letting your cats go outside unsupervised. By writing this post, I’m not bashing on people for their decisions at all, because I strongly believe in the words each to their own, and live and let live.

So, why would I never, ever let Fin outside without supervision? Honestly, it’s because I’m a paranoid little cat momma. I would be constantly worrying over him, because the outside world can be very dangerous. I know that sounds cliché, but I just don’t think letting him outside is worth the risk. My main concern is traffic, because we have a pretty big road near our house, but there are smaller concerns as well; what if he gets stolen? What if he gets lost? Eats something poisonous? Gets into a fight with other cats, and gets sick because of it? Cats are very clever beings, but Ragdolls are very trusting by nature, and I hate to say it, but Fin is kinda dumb sometimes (in a cute way). I could easily see him being picked up by a stranger or trapping himself somewhere. Now, if I lived on a farm or large house with fenced off property, I would be a lot more open to the idea; he’d get to roam the grounds safely without all these dangers.

Of course, I know some cats love being outside (Fin is starting to play with the idea more, but he’s not really all that into it), which is why I fully support the idea of a catio, and teaching your cat to walk on a leash. When I move out of my parents house and get my own place, I will definitely try to get one with a balcony that I can convert into a catio for Fin, but for now, I’ll take him outside every once in a while.

Like I said, each to their own. If you have an outside cat, I would love to know your reasons behind the decision, I’m always open to learning. Do you have a schedule for letting your cat go outside? I know some kitty doors offer night lock options, etc, so I’d love to know how you do it!  If you’re getting your own kitty, what will you be doing, and why?
